John Herald (6 septembre 1939 – 18 juillet 2005) était un auteur-compositeur-interprète et guitariste américain, figure importante du renouveau folk et bluegrass des années 1960 et 1970. Né à New York, il grandit dans un environnement artistique, influencé par son père, le poète arménien Leon Srabian Herald. Très tôt, il est exposé aux grands noms de la musique folk comme Lead Belly et Woody Guthrie.
En 1958, il cofonde The Greenbriar Boys, un trio pionnier de bluegrass urbain aux côtés de Bob Yellin (banjo) et Paul Prestopino (mandoline). Ils marquent la scène folk de Greenwich Village et deviennent le premier groupe nordiste à triompher au prestigieux concours de l’Union Grove Fiddler’s Convention. Leur fusion de bluegrass traditionnel et de folk américain influence une génération d’artistes, dont Joan Baez et Bob Dylan.
En 1973, John Herald publie son premier album solo éponyme chez Paramount Records. Cet album incarne une transition vers le folk rock, sans renier ses racines acoustiques. John Herald (September 6, 1939 – July 18, 2005) was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist known for his pivotal role in the folk and bluegrass revival of the 1960s and 70s. Born in New York City to Armenian poet Leon Srabian Herald, he was exposed early on to the music of Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, and other influential artists.
In 1958, he co-founded The Greenbriar Boys, a groundbreaking urban bluegrass trio with Bob Yellin and Paul Prestopino. They became central to the Greenwich Village folk scene and were the first Northern band to win at the Union Grove Fiddler’s Convention. Their blend of traditional bluegrass and American folk left a lasting mark on contemporaries including Joan Baez and Bob Dylan.
In 1973, Herald released his self-titled solo debut on Paramount Records. The album reflects his artistic evolution, blending folk rock with acoustic traditions.
