Avant d’incarner le rock FM calibré des années 80 avec le mythique Don't Stop Believin', Journey est né en 1973 à San Francisco comme une formation virtuose issue des cendres de Santana et Frumious Bandersnatch. Leur premier album, Journey, est un disque de rock progressif instrumental et sophistiqué, très éloigné de leurs futurs tubes. Sans chanteur attitré, le groupe mise ici sur la technicité de ses musiciens : Gregg Rolie aux claviers et au chant, Neal Schon à la guitare, George Tickner à la rythmique, Ross Valory à la basse et Aynsley Dunbar à la batterie. À mi-chemin entre jazz fusion et rock psyché progressif, ce premier essai témoigne d’une audace créative remarquable, avec des compositions complexes et planantes, parfois instrumentales, où la virtuosité s’exprime sans esbroufe.

Long before becoming arena rock superstars in the ’80s, Journey debuted in 1975 with a self-titled album that showcased their progressive and fusion roots. Featuring former members of Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch, the band’s early sound blended instrumental complexity, jazz-rock elements, and progressive arrangements. Journey is marked by rich keyboard textures, extended instrumental sections, and dynamic interplay between the guitar and rhythm section. Gregg Rolie handles vocals with a restrained, bluesy style, while Neal Schon and Aynsley Dunbar shine instrumentally. A far cry from their later pop hits, this debut remains a fascinating document of their ambitious beginnings.
