Dernier opus studio de Kaleidoscope (US), Bernice paraît en 1970 dans un climat de tensions internes. David Lindley, seul membre fondateur encore présent, tente de sauver l’aventure en injectant un rock plus musclé et électrique. L’album délaisse partiellement les explorations orientales qui faisaient l’originalité du groupe, au profit d’un blues-rock nerveux parfois teinté de country. Malgré des compositions intéressantes, Bernice souffre d’un manque de cohésion. Il reste néanmoins un témoignage touchant de la fin d’un groupe visionnaire qui n’a jamais rencontré le succès qu’il méritait.

Bernice marked the final studio outing of Kaleidoscope (US), released in 1970 amid major lineup changes. With David Lindley as the sole original member, the album leans more into electric blues-rock and country flavors, stepping back from the band’s earlier Eastern-influenced psychedelia. Despite the internal turmoil and a less unified sound, Berniceholds moments of brilliance and stands as the swan song of a groundbreaking but underappreciated band.
