Enregistré en 1970 à Cincinnati, cet album mêle rock psychédélique, jazz expérimental, funk et musique contemporaine dans un collage audacieux et quasi inclassable. Premiers éléments d’afro-rock progressif ? Bande-son pour un film imaginaire ? Ce disque culte, resté confidentiel pendant des décennies, est aujourd’hui considéré comme l’une des curiosités les plus avant-gardistes du label People Records.

The Grodeck Whipperjenny is the mind-bending project of David Matthews, best known as James Brown's bandleader and arranger. Released in 1970 on Brown’s own People label, this rare LP blends psychedelic rock, free jazz, funk, and classical influences into a visionary and genre-defying trip. As the first album released on People Records, it holds a unique place in the intersection of experimental rock and soul music. Largely unnoticed upon release, it has since gained a cult reputation among crate diggers and collectors of early psych-funk oddities.
