Issu de Charterhouse School (Angleterre), Genesis se forme en 1967 autour de Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, Mike Rutherford et le batteur John Silver. Leur premier album, From Genesis to Revelation, sort le 28 mars 1969 chez Decca ; il mêle pop baroque, rock psychédélique et orchestrations (cordes et cuivres signés Arthur Greenslade) dans un style encore tendre et mélodique . Produit par Jonathan King selon un concept biblique, le disque passe inaperçu — certains magasins le classant maladroitement en section religieuse . Pour profiter de la notoriété du groupe, Decca le réédite en 1974 sous le titre In the Beginning, avec une pochette différente , puis sous d’autres appellations (« And the Word Was… »…) . Malgré un son encore léger, l’album révèle la singularité des compositions et annonce le rock progressif, même si le groupe gardera peu de droits sur ce premier disque .

Formed at Charterhouse School in 1967, Genesis—Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, Mike Rutherford, and drummer John Silver—released their debut From Genesis to Revelation on 28 March 1969 via Decca. The album blends baroque pop, gentle psychedelia, and orchestrated arrangements by Arthur Greenslade in a formative and melodic style . Produced by Jonathan King as a loose biblical concept, it failed commercially and was often mistakenly shelved in religious sections . To capitalize on the band’s later fame, Decca reissued it in 1974 as In the Beginning, with new artwork f—and even under titles like And the Word Was…—while the band retained no rights to it . Though stylistically quaint, it foreshadows themes of their future progressive rock direction.
