Groupe obscur américain du début des années 70, Mud est l’archétype parfait de ces formations talentueuses mais éphémères, dont le disque unique reste aujourd’hui un objet culte pour les amateurs de hard rock underground. Sorti en 1970 sur le label Buffalo Bill Productions, Mud On Mudd propose un cocktail honnête de rock musclé, teinté de psychédélisme et de soul, dans la veine de Spooky Tooth ou des premiers Procol Harum. On y trouve une poignée de compositions originales (signées notamment par Vic Gabrielle, A. Klein et Tom Gonzales) ainsi que quelques reprises (Traffic, Beatles…). La voix râpeuse du chanteur évoque un Joe Cocker plus sobre, et le groupe se distingue par un excellent travail aux claviers et une guitare incisive. Très peu d’informations circulent sur les musiciens, mais l’album dégage une cohérence rare qui mérite redécouverte.

A lost gem from the early '70s, Mud On Mudd by American band Mud was released in 1970 by Buffalo Bill Productions. The group, of which little historical data exists, delivered a solid blend of hard rock, soul, and psych influences, comparable to early Spooky Tooth or Procol Harum. The raspy lead vocals recall a restrained Joe Cocker, and both the keyboardist and guitarist shine throughout the record. The album mixes covers (including songs by Traffic and the Beatles) with credible originals credited to A. Klein, Vic Gabrielle, and Tom G. Though obscure, the LP is surprisingly consistent and rewarding for fans of vintage underground rock.
