Né de la rencontre de musiciens de studio de la scène West Coast, The Section fut à la fois un groupe instrumental autonome et la colonne vertébrale musicale d’artistes comme James Taylor, Carole King, Jackson Browne ou Crosby & Nash. Leur premier album, The Section (1972), est un bijou jazz-rock aux nuances funk, fusion et soft prog. Sans voix, mais rempli d’âme, il illustre l’élégance et la fluidité de musiciens à la virtuosité discrète. Rarement mis en avant, ce disque est pourtant essentiel à qui s'intéresse au son de Laurel Canyon et à l’école Warner/Asylum.
