Sorti en août 1969 sur le label Elektra, The Stooges est le premier album du groupe éponyme originaire d’Ann Arbor, Michigan. Porté par la voix féline et provocante d’Iggy Pop, ce disque incarne les prémices du punk rock, bien avant l’heure. Brut, minimaliste, viscéral, il rompt avec l’esthétique psychédélique dominante de l’époque pour proposer un rock cru, martelé par des riffs primitifs et une tension sauvage.
Les Stooges, formés autour des frères Ron et Scott Asheton, imposent dès ce premier opus une formule explosive : guitares distordues, rythmes répétitifs, textes nihilistes. Released in August 1969 on Elektra Records, The Stooges is the raw and uncompromising debut album of the Ann Arbor-based band led by the charismatic Iggy Pop. Marking the dawn of what would later become punk rock, the album rejects the psychedelic norms of its time in favor of stripped-down, primal rock energy.
Backed by the thunderous guitar of Ron Asheton and the pounding rhythm section of Dave Alexander and Scott Asheton, Iggy Pop’s snarling vocals deliver youthful rage and alienation. Produced by John Cale (of The Velvet Underground), the album didn’t achieve immediate commercial success but later gained legendary status. Tracks like “1969,” “No Fun,” and “I Wanna Be Your Dog” are now regarded as anthems of proto-punk rebellion.
