Released in March 1968, We’re Only in It for the Money is Frank Zappa’s biting satire of the hippie movement and American society at large. With The Mothers of Invention, Zappa delivers a bold and experimental collage of musique concrète, spoken word, doo-wop, psychedelic rock, and avant-garde madness. The album skewers both the establishment and the so-called counterculture, encapsulated in a chaotic but deliberate sonic landscape. Its original cover, mimicking Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, caused legal frictions and perfectly embodies Zappa’s approach: critical, fearless, and musically unique.
