Saffron Summerfield, née le 29 août 1949 à Weston Favell, dans le Northamptonshire (Angleterre), est une auteure-compositrice-interprète, guitariste et artiste audiovisuelle britannique. Elle émerge sur la scène folk londonienne au début des années 1970, partageant l’affiche avec des figures notables comme Sandy Denny, Al Stewart ou Long John Baldry. Elle se distingue par un jeu de guitare fluide, influencé par le picking folk et le blues acoustique, ainsi que par une voix claire et expressive.

En 1970, elle rejoint Trader Horne, une éphémère formation psychédélique-folk issue de la galaxie Fairport Convention, avec qui elle enregistre plusieurs titres restés longtemps inédits. Après la dissolution du groupe, Saffron choisit de voler de ses propres ailes.

En 1974, elle crée son propre label Mother Earth Music et y publie son premier album, Salisbury Plain. Deux ans plus tard, paraît Fancy Meeting You Here!, œuvre plus aboutie où elle confirme son style : une folk intimiste, parfois teintée de jazz et de blues, portée par des textes personnels et souvent engagés. Ces deux albums seront réédités en 2015 sous le titre The Early Years.

Au-delà de sa carrière musicale, Saffron Summerfield a aussi composé pour des documentaires et fictions diffusés par Channel 4 et la BBC, et a participé à des sessions live, notamment pour John Peel. Elle a également enseigné la composition et la production sonore, tout en continuant d'explorer l’univers de la création audiovisuelle contemporaine.

Saffron Summerfield, born on August 29, 1949, in Weston Favell, Northamptonshire, is a British singer-songwriter, guitarist, and multimedia artist. She began her musical career in the early 1970s on the vibrant London folk scene, performing alongside artists such as Sandy Denny, Al Stewart, and Long John Baldry. Her style combines fingerstyle guitar playing with clear vocals and a blend of folk, blues, and subtle jazz influences.

In 1970, she joined Trader Horne, a psychedelic folk project related to Fairport Convention, where she contributed to several recordings, although a full album was never released at the time. After the group's disbandment, Saffron launched her solo career.

She founded her own label, Mother Earth Music, in 1974, releasing her debut album Salisbury Plain. In 1976, she followed up with Fancy Meeting You Here!, a more refined and confident work that showcased her lyrical depth and musical versatility. These two albums were reissued together in 2015 as The Early Years.

Outside of her solo albums, Saffron Summerfield composed music for BBC and Channel 4 television productions and performed in numerous radio broadcasts, including a live session for John Peel. She has also worked as an educator in songwriting and sound production, while continuing to develop her practice as a multimedia artist.
