Aynsley Dunbar, né le 10 janvier 1946 à Liverpool, est l’un des batteurs britanniques les plus respectés, reconnu pour sa polyvalence allant du blues-rock à la fusion et au rock progressif. Il entame sa carrière dans les années 1960 avec Derry Wilkie and the Pressmen, avant de rejoindre The Mojos en 1964, puis John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers en 1967.
En 1968, il fonde The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation, formation blues-rock qui publie plusieurs albums. Après sa dissolution, il fonde en 1970 Blue Whale, un projet plus expérimental orienté jazz-rock fusion. L’unique album du groupe, Blue Whale, enregistré aux Marquee Studios de Londres, propose une approche audacieuse et technique du genre, avec des morceaux comme "Willing to Fight", "Going Home", et une reprise intense de "Willie the Pimp" de Frank Zappa.
Tout au long de sa carrière, Dunbar collabore avec des figures majeures : Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Jeff Beck, Lou Reed, Journey, Whitesnake… Son jeu, alliant virtuosité et sensibilité, traverse les époques et les styles avec brio.

Aynsley Dunbar, born January 10, 1946 in Liverpool, England, is a renowned drummer known for his exceptional versatility across blues, jazz fusion, and rock. He began his professional career in 1963 with Derry Wilkie and the Pressmen, later joining The Mojos in 1964, and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in 1967, following legendary drummers like Hughie Flint and Keef Hartley.
In 1968, he formed The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation, a blues-rock outfit with multiple acclaimed albums. After that band disbanded, Dunbar launched a new group in 1970 called Blue Whale, exploring jazz-rock fusion. Their sole album, Blue Whale, recorded at London’s Marquee Studios, features innovative tracks like "Willing to Fight", "Going Home", and a dynamic cover of Zappa’s "Willie the Pimp".
Throughout his career, Dunbar worked with a host of major artists including Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Jeff Beck, Lou Reed, Journey, and Whitesnake, earning widespread recognition for his technical mastery and expressive power behind the drums.
