Initialement enregistré entre 1969 et 1970 mais retardé pour des raisons juridiques, Asylum Choir II paraît finalement en 1971 sur Shelter Records. On y retrouve le duo Leon Russell et Marc Benno, dans une veine plus mûre et plus soul que sur leur premier disque. Moins expérimental mais tout aussi personnel, l’album mêle rock sudiste, rhythm'n'blues, gospel et touches de country dans un style déjà emblématique de ce que deviendra la carrière solo de Leon Russell. Arrangements luxuriants, chœurs inspirés, groove décontracté : une œuvre de transition, entre studio pop psychédélique et americana avant l'heure.

Though recorded in 1969–70, Asylum Choir II was delayed due to legal disputes and finally released in 1971 on Shelter Records. This second and final album by Leon Russell and Marc Benno moves away from the psychedelic collage style of their debut in favor of a warmer, soul-infused sound that previews Russell’s later solo work. With elements of southern rock, gospel, R&B, and country, the album showcases tight musicianship, lush arrangements, and heartfelt songwriting, making it a smooth yet sophisticated swan song for the duo.
