Originaire de Detroit, Power of Zeus est un groupe de hard rock psychédélique formé à la fin des années 60, initialement sous le nom de Gangrene. Repérés par le producteur Jim Vitti, ils signent chez le label Rare Earth (filiale psych/rock de Motown Records) et enregistrent The Gospel According to Zeus, leur unique album, en 1970. L’opus mêle riffs lourds, claviers moites et textes souvent ésotériques ou contestataires, dans une veine qui rappelle Vanilla Fudge, Blue Cheer ou les premiers Deep Purple. Malgré un impact commercial limité à sa sortie, l’album est devenu un objet de culte, réhabilité dans les années 90 grâce aux amateurs de heavy psych et de stoner rock. Le titre “The Sorcerer of Isis” a notamment été samplé par plusieurs artistes hip-hop.

Detroit-based Power of Zeus emerged from the late-60s rock scene, originally known as Gangrene. Their sole album, The Gospel According to Zeus, was released in 1970 on Motown's Rare Earth imprint. Fusing heavy guitar riffs, psychedelic keyboards, and mystical lyrics, the album walks a fine line between acid rock, early metal, and proto-prog. Though overlooked upon release, it has since become a cult favorite among collectors of obscure hard psych. “The Sorcerer of Isis (The Ritual of the Mole)” remains a standout track, later sampled by various hip-hop producers. The band's heavy, raw sound reflects the gritty spirit of Motor City rock at the dawn of the 70s.
