The Charlatans were one of the founding groups of the San Francisco psychedelic scene, known for their eccentric 1890s-inspired fashion and unique blend of jug band, blues, folk, and early rock. Despite their influential role, their only studio album wasn’t released until 1968, long after their initial spark. Issued on Philips, the record is more of a throwback than a freak-out—an album tinged with saloon piano, old-time harmonies, and rootsy charm. Though commercially overlooked, it remains a cult classic of early American psych.
