The Third Bardo est l’un de ces groupes éphémères de la scène garage psychédélique new-yorkaise dont l’unique enregistrement est devenu mythique. Fondé en 1967, le groupe tire son nom du Bardo Thödol (ou « Livre tibétain des morts »), et incarne à merveille la transition entre l’esprit garage et les hallucinations psyché. Leur unique single, I'm Five Years Ahead of My Time, coécrit par Rusty Evans (a.k.a. Marcus Uzilevsky) et Vicky Pike, épouse de Lou Reed, est sorti sur Roulette Records.

Porté par une fuzz acide, des lignes de basse hypnotiques et une batterie martelée, ce morceau visionnaire défie les conventions du rock de l’époque. Le chanteur Jeff Monn (alias Chris Moon) y injecte une urgence et une étrangeté troublantes. Trop en avance sur son temps — justement — le titre est rapidement censuré pour ses connotations psychotropes et disparaît des radars. Le groupe se dissout la même année.

Aujourd’hui, I'm Five Years Ahead of My Time est unanimement salué comme un classique du garage psyché américain, souvent compilé, notamment sur Nuggets. Il reste l’un des exemples les plus frappants de ce que l’on appelait alors la "freakbeat attitude".

The Third Bardo was a short-lived New York City garage-psychedelic band, best known for their lone single, I'm Five Years Ahead of My Time, released in 1967 on Roulette Records. The band took their name from the Tibetan Book of the Dead, signaling their psychedelic leanings from the outset.

Their song was co-written by Rusty Evans (aka Marcus) and Vicky Pike (Lou Reed's then-girlfriend), and features heavily distorted fuzz guitar, pounding rhythms, and the commanding vocals of Jeff Monn. Lyrically and sonically ahead of its time, the track was controversial, reportedly banned from some radio stations due to perceived drug references.

Despite the band’s disbandment in the same year, the single achieved cult status over time, becoming a staple of garage rock compilations, including the legendary Nuggets. With its proto-punk energy and forward-thinking vision, it has become emblematic of the genre’s raw power and rebellious spirit.
