Playmates marque le retour inattendu des Small Faces en 1977, huit ans après leur séparation. Steve Marriott, Kenney Jones, Ian McLagan et Ronnie Lane s’étaient brièvement réunis, mais ce dernier quitte vite le projet, remplacé par Rick Wills. Si l’album ne retrouve pas la magie des années 60, il propose un rock plus mature, aux accents FM et bluesy, marqué par la voix toujours aussi expressive de Marriott. C’est une tentative de renaissance entre nostalgie et adaptation aux sons de l’époque.

Playmates marked the unexpected 1977 reunion of the Small Faces, nearly a decade after their breakup. Although Ronnie Lane initially joined, he soon exited the project and was replaced by bassist Rick Wills. The album features a more adult-oriented rock sound, blending FM radio polish with bluesy undertones. While it lacks the youthful mod explosiveness of their 60s work, Steve Marriott’s powerful voice remains its strongest asset in this attempt to rekindle past glories.
