Released in 1975, Katy Lied is Steely Dan’s fourth studio album and their first after fully becoming a studio-only project. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker enlisted top-tier session players—Jeff Porcaro, Michael McDonald, Larry Carlton among them—to realize their intricate fusion of rock, jazz, and pop. Despite their dissatisfaction with the album's final sound (due to DBX noise-reduction system issues), Katy Lied is a quintessential Steely Dan record, filled with elegant arrangements and sharp, cryptic lyrics. Tracks like "Black Friday", "Bad Sneakers", and "Doctor Wu" showcase their increasingly sophisticated and introspective songwriting.
