The Idle Race, formation britannique originaire de Birmingham, est surtout connue pour avoir été le tremplin du jeune Jeff Lynne, futur leader d’Electric Light Orchestra. Après deux premiers albums à l’univers psychédélique léger et mélodique, le groupe publie en 1971 Time Is, leur ultime effort, sans Lynne qui avait rejoint The Move. Ce troisième album marque un tournant plus rock et plus sombre, flirtant avec le rock progressif et le hard rock naissant, tout en conservant une touche baroque britannique. Moins fantaisiste mais plus mûr, Time Is est une Å“uvre de transition souvent négligée, pourtant riche d’arrangements subtils et de compositions solides. The Idle Race, from Birmingham, UK, gained early recognition as the launching pad for Jeff Lynne before he joined The Move and founded ELO. Their final album, Time Is (1971), was recorded after Lynne's departure and represents a shift from whimsical psychedelic pop to a denser, more progressive and hard-edged sound. Though less acclaimed than their earlier works, Time Is stands as a hidden gem of British early '70s rock, showcasing tighter arrangements and mature songwriting.
