Dernier album studio du Steppenwolf "classique", Skullduggery marque la fin d’un cycle. Le groupe y livre un mélange de rock musclé et de touches funk-rock, tout en conservant un vernis FM dans la production. Moins inspiré que ses prédécesseurs, l’album souffre d’un manque de cohésion, bien qu’on y trouve quelques titres accrocheurs comme Life Is a Gamble ou Sleep. Le groupe se sépare de nouveau peu après, laissant cet opus comme le chant du cygne d’une période marquée par la quête de renouveau.

Skullduggery, released in 1976, is Steppenwolf’s final studio album of their original era. The record mixes gritty rock elements with funk and polished arrangements, but lacks the cohesion and urgency of earlier efforts. Tracks like Life Is a Gamble and Sleep stand out, yet the album feels like the closing chapter of a band running out of steam. Soon after, Steppenwolf would disband again, closing their classic period with a bittersweet farewell.
