🇺🇸 Biography (English)
Formed in early 1990s London, Kula Shaker gained attention for their unique fusion of British psychedelic rock and Indian musical influences, with lyrics often rooted in Hindu spirituality. Led by the charismatic Crispian Mills, their debut album K was released in 1996 during the height of the Britpop era. Featuring hits like Tattva and Govinda (sung in Sanskrit), the record was a commercial success in the UK. K stands out for its blend of 60s-inspired guitars, Eastern mysticism, and lush production—bridging classic psych-rock with spiritual modernity.
When K has appeared in stores, we were in the midst brit-pop and Kula Shakera was quickly typecast as a full member of this movement. Yet listen to this first successful album (at least for a big half), the links between the Londoners with Oasis, Blur or other movement of the dinosaurs are anything but obvious. K is a very elaborate album, which starts from the first note to the quest for a unique identity, zeppelinien between rock, pop and 60's oriental sounds, a kind of mix of genres and influences that particularly suits the group picture . With some texts in Sanskrit ( "Tattva" and "Govinda"), it also affects the mysticism which was the characteristic of the 70's rock. Here's a few references where Kula Shaker is located on his first album.
