   Formed in mid-60s New York, The Velvet Underground brought together Lou Reed’s gritty street poetry with John Cale’s avant-garde sensibilities. With the backing of Andy Warhol, who acted as artistic producer, the band introduced German singer Nico for a unique collaboration. Their debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico, released in 1967, shocked audiences with its raw depiction of taboo subjects: heroin use, sexual identity, alienation, and urban decay. Initially a commercial failure, the album became a cornerstone of alternative music, influencing countless genres from punk to indie rock. Its legacy is unmatched: “only sold a few thousand copies, but everyone who bought one started a band.”
