Formé à Glasgow en 1969, String Driven Thing débute comme un trio acoustique folk composé de Chris Adams (guitare, chant), Pauline Adams (chant, percussions) et John Mannion (guitare). En 1972, le groupe évolue vers un son plus électrique et progressif avec l'arrivée du violoniste Grahame Smith et du bassiste Colin Wilson. Cette nouvelle formation signe avec le label Charisma Records et enregistre l'album String Driven Thing aux IBC Studios de Londres, produit par Shel Talmy. L'album se distingue par l'intégration audacieuse du violon dans un contexte rock, offrant une fusion unique de folk, de rock progressif et de pop baroque. Malgré des critiques positives, l'album ne rencontre pas un grand succès commercial, mais il établit le groupe comme une figure culte de la scène progressive britannique.

Formed in Glasgow in 1969, String Driven Thing began as an acoustic folk trio featuring Chris Adams (guitar, vocals), Pauline Adams (vocals, percussion), and John Mannion (guitar). In 1972, the band transitioned to a more electric and progressive sound with the addition of violinist Grahame Smith and bassist Colin Wilson. This revamped lineup signed with Charisma Records and recorded the album String Driven Thing at London's IBC Studios, produced by Shel Talmy.The album is notable for its bold integration of violin into a rock context, delivering a unique fusion of folk, progressive rock, and baroque pop. Despite positive reviews, the album didn't achieve significant commercial success but established the band as a cult figure in the British progressive scene.
