En 1974, suite à des tensions avec Captain Beefheart, plusieurs membres clés de sa Magic Band — Bill Harkleroad (alias Zoot Horn Rollo), Mark Boston (alias Rockette Morton) et Art Tripp III (alias Ed Marimba) — quittent le groupe pour former Mallard. Avec l'aide d'Ian Anderson de Jethro Tull, qui leur prête son studio mobile, ils enregistrent leur premier album éponyme en 1975. Ce disque mêle des influences de blues, de rock expérimental et de country, tout en conservant l'esprit avant-gardiste de la Magic Band. Bien que l'album n'ait pas rencontré un succès commercial significatif, il reste une Å“uvre culte pour les amateurs de rock expérimental des années 70.

In 1974, following tensions with Captain Beefheart, key members of his Magic Band — Bill Harkleroad (aka Zoot Horn Rollo), Mark Boston (aka Rockette Morton), and Art Tripp III (aka Ed Marimba) — departed to form Mallard. With assistance from Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, who provided his mobile studio, they recorded their self-titled debut album in 1975. The record blends blues, experimental rock, and country influences, retaining the avant-garde spirit of the Magic Band. Although the album didn't achieve significant commercial success, it remains a cult favorite among fans of 1970s experimental rock.
