Après la séparation définitive des Byrds en 1973, Roger McGuinn publie son premier album solo, sobrement intitulé Roger McGuinn. Il y mêle folk, rock et touches country dans un style personnel où subsiste l’héritage sonore de son groupe emblématique. Le disque comporte plusieurs titres coécrits avec Jacques Levy, collaborateur de Bob Dylan, dont l’envoûtant « Jolly Roger ». Si l’album n’obtient qu’un succès modeste, il établit clairement McGuinn comme un artiste capable de tracer sa propre route, entre narration poétique, guitare Rickenbacker et arrangements subtils.

Following the final disbanding of The Byrds in 1973, Roger McGuinn launched his solo career with the self-titled Roger McGuinn. The album blends folk, rock, and country influences, retaining the sonic legacy of his former band. Several tracks were co-written with Jacques Levy, Bob Dylan’s lyricist, including the vivid “Jolly Roger.” Though only modestly successful commercially, this debut positioned McGuinn as a storyteller in his own right, with poetic lyrics, ringing 12-string guitar, and understated arrangements.
