The Doors returned at studio in 1970 to record Morrison Hotel, an album that, despite yielding no major hit singles, offered them to critical favor with hip listeners. An increasingly bluesy flavor began to color the songwriting and arrangements, especially on  'Roadhouse Blues'. Some mysticism was still present on 'Waiting for the Sun', 'Queen of the Highway' and 'Indian Summer'; 'Ship of Fools' and 'Land Ho!' have brought effective equilibrium between the hard rock arrangements and the narrative reach of the lyrics. 'Peace Frog' was the most political and controversial track, documenting the domestic unrest of late-'60s America before unexpectedly diving into the restful ballad 'Blue Sunday'. 'The Spy', by contrast, was a slow blues that pointed to the direction that would fully blossom on L.A. Woman.

Les Doors sont retournés au studio en 1970 pour enregistrer Morrison Hôtel, un album qui, bien que n'ayant pas engendré de titres à succès, les a tout de même gratifiés d'une appréciation très favorable  des critiques. Une saveur plus bluesy a commencé à colorer l'écriture et les arrangements, en particulier sur 'Roadhouse Blues'. Certain mysticisme était encore présent sur 'Waiting for the Sun', 'Queen of the Highway' et 'Indian Summer'. 'Ship of Fools' et 'Land Ho!' ont quant à eux apporté un équilibre efficace entre les arrangements de hard rock et la portée narrative des paroles. 'Peace Frog' qui était la piste la plus politique et la plus controversée, décrivait les troubles intérieurs de l'Amérique à la fin des années 60 avant d'ouvrir de façon inattendue sur la ballade reposante 'Blue Sunday'. 'The Spy', en revanche, était un blues lent et dévoilait clairement l'orientation qui sera pleinement développée sur L.A. Woman.
