🎸 Gentle Giant - Octopus (1972)

Octopus as The Dark Side Of The Moon Pink Floyd or Close to The Edge for Yes, is considered the most successful album of the band. It is true that we find here all elements that have marked the world of Gentle Giant, this time less smoothly, where the transitions between songs are steeper, making sure that we go to one genre to another without prior preparation. On this fourth album, the medieval influence is ever present, their love of counterpoint is pushed to the sophistication of heights hitherto unequaled virtuosity and does not prevent them to write a poignant ballads of romance ( 'Think of me with Kindness'). In fact, more than a summit, Octopus is mainly the end of a chapter since, out of this session, the third of the Shulman brothers, Philip, will leave the ship, forcing our gifted to new perspectives.

Octopus, comme The Dark Side of The Moon pour Pink Floyd ou Close to The Edge pour Yes, est considéré comme l'album le plus réussi du groupe. Il est vrai que l'on retrouve ici tous les éléments qui ont déjà marqué  l'univers de Gentle Giant, cette fois de manière moins fluide, où les transitions entre les titres sont plus abruptes, faisant en sorte que l'on passe d'un genre à l'autre sans préparation préalable. Sur ce quatrième album, l''influence médiévale est toujours plus présente, leur amour du contrepoint est poussé vers des sommets de sophistication jusque là inégalés et leur virtuosité ne les empêche pas d'écrire des ballades d'un romantisme poignant ('Think of Me with Kindness'). En réalité, plus qu'un sommet, Octopus est surtout la fin d'un chapitre puisqu'au sortir de cette session, le troisième des frères Shulman, Philip, va quitter le navire, obligeant nos surdoués à entrevoir de nouvelles perspectives.
