Titus Groan était un groupe britannique de rock progressif formé en 1969, tirant son nom du roman de Mervyn Peake. Le quatuor (Stuart Cowell, John Lee, Tony Priestland, Jim Toomey) publie un unique album éponyme sur le label Dawn Records en 1970. Entre jazz-rock, psychédélisme et touches folkloriques médiévales, l’album marie flûte, hautbois, saxophone et guitares électriques avec une certaine maîtrise. Malgré quelques critiques sur la faiblesse des compositions, l’album fascine encore par son énergie, sa fraîcheur et sa crédibilité progressive, bien au-delà de son époque ultra-savoureuse.

Titus Groan was a short-lived British progressive rock quartet, active in 1969–1971, named after the character in Mervyn Peake’s novel. Their sole self-titled album, released on Dawn Records in 1970, showcases a fusion of jazz-prog, psychedelic rock and folk-tinged motifs. Featuring Stuart Cowell (guitar/keys/vocals), Tony Priestland (flute, oboe, sax), John Lee (bass) and Jim Toomey (drums), the record blends lush winds with driving rhythm and fuzzed guitars. Although the songwriting was viewed as inconsistent, the album remains a fresh, energetic and original artefact of British prog rarity.
