Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera was a British psychedelic rock band formed in 1967, blending psychedelic pop, blues, experimental rock, and folk influences. The band took its name from the movie Elmer Gantry and from the theatrical persona of lead singer Dave Terry, renamed "Elmer Gantry." Their self-titled 1968 debut album features diverse arrangements, rich vocal harmonies, and a playful musical spirit. Although it failed to achieve major commercial success, it is now regarded as a cult gem of late-sixties UK psych-rock.
