Formé à Brighton en 1968, The Fox était un quintet anglais issu de la scène mod-soul, avec Steve Brayne (guitare et chant), Alex Lane (orgue, piano, chant), Winston Weatherill (guitare, sitar), Dave Windross (basse, piano) et Tim Reeves (batterie) . Leur unique album, For Fox Sake, sorti en 1970 sur Fontana (puis Crewe en Amérique du Nord, avec un artwork alternatif), explore un rock psychédélique adouci de soul, boogie et touches progressives. Sertis de mélodies soignées et d’envolées organo-guitaristiques, des titres comme Butterfly ou Madame Magical sont devenus des classiques huppés de la scène psych‑pop UK. Malgré un accueil critique flatteur, le groupe est aussitôt dissous lorsque leur management se focalise sur Black Sabbath .

Formed in Brighton in 1968, The Fox delivered a singular psych-pop gem with their sole album For Fox Sake, released in 1970 on Fontana (Crewe in North America with different artwork). Fronted by Steve Brayne and Alex Lane, and featuring Winston Weatherill’s sitar guitar and Alex’s Hammond flair, the band fused psychedelic rock, soul, and proto‑prog elements. Tracks like Butterfly and the nine-minute Madame Magical typify the lush, guitar‑organ interplay that has earned the album cult status among collector circles. Unfortunately, the group disbanded when management shifted focus to Black Sabbath.
