Released in May 1976, Illegal Stills is Stephen Stills’ fourth solo album and reflects his effort to evolve artistically after the peak years with CSN&Y. Co-produced with guitarist Donnie Dacus, the album features a slicker, more rock-oriented sound with R&B and pop rock influences. Though not critically lauded, the album maintains a consistent tone and showcases Stills’ versatility and melodic instinct in a changing musical landscape.
