Formé à Los Angeles en 1967 sous le nom de Pacific Gas and Electric Blues Band, le groupe se distingue par sa fusion de blues rock, soul et jazz-rock. Après un premier disque autoproduit (Get It On, 1968) puis un album éponyme chez Columbia en 1969, Are You Ready? marque leur percée commerciale. Porté par le single gospel-blues éponyme, co-écrit par Charlie Allen et John Hill, le groupe atteint le Top 15 aux États-Unis et franchit les frontières. L’album est également remarquable pour ses chœurs féminins assurés par The Blackberries et pour son mélange audacieux d’énergie brute et d’arrangements soignés.

Originating in Los Angeles in 1967 as the Pacific Gas and Electric Blues Band, the group blended blues rock, soul, and jazz-rock. Following their debut Get It On (1968) and a Columbia self-titled release in 1969, Are You Ready? became their commercial breakthrough. Anchored by the gospel-blues hit co-written by Charlie Allen and John Hill, the album cracked the Top 15 in the U.S. Its standout feature includes female backing vocals by The Blackberries and a bold mix of raw grooves and polished arrangements.
