Formé en 1974 en Caroline du Nord, le Super Grit Cowboy Band est un groupe de country rock et de southern rock. The band was founded by Clyde Mattocks (steel guitar, Dobro, banjo, electric guitar), Danny Vinson (drums), Mike Kinzie (fiddle, saxophone, piano, harmonica, acoustic guitar), Bill Ellis (bass, keyboards), and Curtis Wright (lead guitar) .

Their second album, If You Can't Hang..., was released in 1981 on their own label, Hoodswamp Records. The album was praised by Billboard for its rock influences and instrumentation . It features notable tracks such as "If You Don't Know Me by Now," which reached No. 71 on the Hot Country Songs chart, and "Carolina by the Sea," which reached No. 64 in 1981 .
