Le groupe Stars est formé au début des années 1970 à New York. Il se compose de Richie Ranno (guitare), Ken Schiumo (basse), Artie Kane (claviers), Joe X. Dube (batterie), et Michael Lee Smith (chant). Le groupe émerge dans un paysage musical alors dominé par le hard rock et le glam, et s’inscrit dans une veine à mi-chemin entre le power pop et le rock FM, avec des influences évidentes de Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, ou encore The Raspberries.

En 1976, Stars publie son premier album éponyme chez Capitol Records. Produit avec soin, cet opus propose une série de titres accrocheurs, portés par la voix énergique de Michael Lee Smith et les riffs tranchants de Richie Ranno. Malgré une réception critique plutôt favorable, l'album passe inaperçu sur le plan commercial, sans doute éclipsé par des groupes plus établis du même registre.

Stars gagnera cependant au fil des années une aura culte, notamment auprès des amateurs de hard rock mélodique des années 70.

Stars was a New York-based rock band formed in the early 1970s, featuring Richie Ranno (guitar), Ken Schiumo (bass), Artie Kane (keyboards), Joe X. Dube (drums), and Michael Lee Smith (vocals). Blending the melodic hooks of power pop with the raw energy of 70s rock, their sound drew comparisons to Cheap Trick, The Raspberries, and early Kiss.

Their self-titled debut album was released in 1976 under Capitol Records. With catchy riffs, polished production, and anthemic choruses, Stars had all the ingredients of a breakout album. However, it didn’t achieve the commercial success it deserved at the time. Still, the band built a loyal following and the album has since become a cult favorite among classic rock enthusiasts.

Stars would go on to release other albums, but this debut remains a defining statement of their energetic and melodic rock identity.
