Released on July 27, 1977, Terrapin Station is the ninth studio album by the Grateful Dead and their first under Arista Records. The album represents a shift in the band's approach, featuring more polished production and orchestration, especially on the title track, which includes string and choral arrangements. This symphonic direction received mixed reactions from fans, with some appreciating the artistic ambition, while others missed the raw, improvisational sound that defined the band's earlier work. Nonetheless, the album reached number 28 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold in 1987. It remains a significant release in the band's progressive era.
