Released in September 1971, Bark represents a significant shift in Jefferson Airplane's trajectory. It is the first album without founding member Marty Balin, who departed during the recording sessions, and without drummer Spencer Dryden, replaced by Joey Covington. The album also introduces violinist Papa John Creach, adding a new sonic layer to the band's sound. Recorded between December 1970 and July 1971 at Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco, Bark was the inaugural release on the band's own Grunt Records label, established in partnership with RCA. The album reached number 11 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold by the RIAA. The single "Pretty as You Feel," co-written by Covington, Casady, and Kaukonen, became the band's final U.S. chart hit, peaking at number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100.
