Née en 1943 au Canada, Joni Mitchell est l'une des figures les plus marquantes du folk et de la chanson d’auteur nord-américaine. Peintre de formation, elle mêle très tôt sensibilité artistique, poésie introspective et harmonies sophistiquées. Song to a Seagull, son premier album, paraît en 1968 sous la houlette de David Crosby. Il révèle une artiste à la voix cristalline, à la guitare envoûtante et à l’imaginaire lyrique déjà très personnel. Loin des formats commerciaux, l’album adopte une structure en deux parties : I Came to the City et Out of the City and Down to the Seaside, reflétant une quête d’identité et d’évasion.

Born in 1943 in Canada, Joni Mitchell quickly emerged as one of the most singular voices of the North American folk scene. A trained painter, she infused her songwriting with visual imagery, emotional depth, and harmonic innovation. Song to a Seagull (1968), produced by David Crosby, was her debut album and a bold artistic statement. Structured in two thematic halves—I Came to the City and Out of the City and Down to the Seaside—the album introduced listeners to her poetic lyricism, alternate tunings, and haunting voice, laying the foundation for a legendary career.

Joni Mitchell's debut release is a concept album. Side one, subtitled 'I Came to the City', generally exhibits songs about urban subjects that are often dour or repressed in some way. 'Out of the City and Down to the Seaside', by contrast, is a celebration of nature and countryside, mostly containing selections of a charming, positive, or more outgoing nature.
