Leur premier album, Journey, est un disque de rock progressif instrumental et sophistiqué, très éloigné de leurs futurs tubes. Sans chanteur attitré, le groupe mise ici sur la technicité de ses musiciens : Gregg Rolie aux claviers et au chant, Neal Schon à la guitare, George Tickner à la rythmique, Ross Valory à la basse et Aynsley Dunbar à la batterie. Formé en 1966 autour du chanteur Bruce Blackman (futur Starbuck), le groupe tire son nom d’une nouvelle de science-fiction d’Arthur C. Clarke. Malgré un succès modeste (notamment avec le single Mrs. Bluebird), l’album Timeless de 1968 illustre un raffinement pop très influencé par les productions de Curt Boettcher ou les Beach Boys. Ce disque, coloré, mélodique, fragile mais ambitieux, est devenu culte pour les amateurs de baroque pop et de psychédélisme soft.

Trio originaire de Floride, The 31st of February est surtout connu pour avoir été le terreau d’une future légende du rock sudiste : Butch Trucks, futur batteur des Allman Brothers Band. À ses côtés, le guitariste Scott Boyer et le bassiste David Brown façonnent en 1968 un unique album éponyme mêlant folk rock psychédélique, harmonies vocales et instrumentation audacieuse. L’album, sorti sur Vanguard Records, reste confidentiel à sa sortie, mais s’est vu réhabilité comme un jalon intéressant de la scène psyché américaine de la côte Est. On y décèle déjà les prémices du son Southern Rock.
