Formé au début des années 70, le duo texan England Dan (Dan Seals) & John Ford Coley s’est imposé dans la pop-rock et le soft rock, notamment avec le tube I’d Really Love to See You Tonight (1976). Leur cinquième album, Dowdy Ferry Road, sorti en mars 1977 sur le label Big Tree, marque une maturité musicale : des ballades chaleureuses, des harmonies soignées et une production polie. Trois singles en ressortent : “It’s Sad to Belong”, “Gone Too Far” et “Where Do I Go from Here”, tous devenus emblématiques du style adult contemporary de l’époque. It’s Sad to Belong atteint la première place du classement Adult Contemporary et reste l’un des plus grands succès du duo.
