Deuxième et dernier album studio du groupe Manassas, Down the Road paraît en avril 1973. Après le succès critique du double album Manassas (1972), Stephen Stills et ses acolytes remettent le couvert avec un disque plus court, plus resserré mais aussi plus inégal. Si l'album conserve l’approche éclectique – country, rock, blues, folk, rhythm & blues latino – il souffre de tensions internes et d’une production moins inspirée. Pourtant, plusieurs morceaux témoignent encore du talent brut du groupe : “Isn’t It About Time”, “Do You Remember the Americans” ou le bluesy “Business on the Street”. Down the Road sonne comme un dernier tour de piste avant la dispersion du groupe, mais laisse un parfum attachant de liberté musicale.

Released in 1973, Down the Road is the second and final studio album by Stephen Stills’ band Manassas. Following the ambitious and acclaimed 1972 debut, this album opts for a tighter, more compact sound, though it has often been seen as less cohesive. Nevertheless, the record retains the band’s stylistic range—country, blues, Latin grooves, and rock—with standout tracks like “Isn’t It About Time” and “Do You Remember the Americans.” Tensions within the band and a sense of fatigue may have dimmed its impact, but Down the Road remains a worthy—if underappreciated—coda to a unique project in Stills’ career.
