The first Santana album takes the challenge to capture in the studio all the excitement generated by one of the hottest theatrical groups of its era. After the San Francisco scene, where the public initiated by the Grateful Dead and Quicksilver taken long jams, this first version of the band Carlos puts the emphasis on spontaneity by offering a disheveled rock-blues and largely instrumental, where duels between six-string nervous leader and jazzy organ Gregg Rolie are restarted by the Afro-Cuban percussion. If the catchy 'Evil Ways' provides his first hit with the group, it is however 'Soul Sacrifice' which asserts itself as the true pièce de résistance of this coup d'masterly essay, with a remarkable solo drummer Mike Schrieve.

Issue de la scène de San Francisco, où le public initié par le Grateful Dead ou Quicksilver prise les longues jams, cette première mouture de la bande à Carlos privilégie avant tout la spontanéité en offrant un rock-blues échevelé et largement instrumental, où les duels entre la six-cordes nerveuse du leader et l'orgue jazzy de Gregg Rolie sont relancés par les percussions afro-cubaines. Si l'accrocheur 'Evil Ways' fournit son premier hit au groupe, c'est cependant 'Soul Sacrifice' qui s'affirme comme la vraie pièce de résistance de ce coup d'essai magistral, avec un remarquable solo du batteur Mike Schrieve.
