Brand New - Déjà Entendu (2003)

Deja Entendu is the second album from Long Island-based rock band Brand New, originally released in 2003. It was widely praised for showing the band's maturation from Your Favorite Weapon. Proving to be more than just another punk-pop outfit, the group made something of a stylistic leap with Deja Entendu, a decidedly matured follow-up that was recorded with Steve Haigler (Pixies, Blake Babies)

City And Colour - Sometimes (2005)

Released in Canada in 2005, Sometimes scored a Juno Award in 2007 for Alternative Album of the Year. Its appealing, whispery acoustic ballads bear scant relation to the scream-heavy post-hardcore played by Alexisonfire, City & Colour leader Dallas Green’s other band. This is no sudden caprice, though Green has been playing the soft stuff since his early teens.

Sorti au Canada en 2005, Sometimes a remporté un prix Juno en 2007 pour l'album alternatif de l'année. Ses ballades acoustiques sonores et chuchotantes ont peu de rapport avec le post-hardcore criard-lourd joué par Alexisonfire, l'autre groupe de Dallas Green, leader de City & Colour. Ce n'est pas un caprice soudain, en effet Green joue des mélodies depuis les premières années de l'adolescence.

Highly representative of the American underground scene of the time, the album has since earned cult status among hard psych collectors and enthusiasts.

Formed in Sydney in 1970, Kahvas Jute issued their sole album Wide Open in January 1971 on Infinity Records. The lineup featured Dennis Wilson (guitar, vocals), Tim Gaze (lead guitar, vocals), Bob Daisley (bass, vocals), and Dannie Davidson (drums). Celebrated for its dual-guitar attack, melodic depth, and tight rhythm section, Wide Open is recognized as one of Australia's premier late‑60s/early‑70s psychedelic‑prog albums.

Wide Open is a consummate example of underground psychedelic hard rock at its most inventive and powerful expression. As the title suggests, Wide Open is a free-flowing and expansive musical blending of rock, blues and jazz, with a touch of acid folk thrown in for good measure. It's a very English-influenced sound but far from being a slavish copy of the british model, the album bears a uniquely Australia flavor.

Camper Van Beethoven - Telephone Free Landslide Victory (1985)

Not simply a rock group but not anything else, Camper Van Beethoven pulled off a series of entertaining fusions throughout its debut record, as the opening song "Border Ska" indicates by name alone. Eastern European folk, tropical grooves, post-punk atmospherics, country laid-back good times, with lyrics about Mao, Greece, and more. Lowery's lead vocals aren't much like what his more famous work in Cracker would indicate, being more speak-singing through shaggy dog stories. The arrangements are eminently suited, sounding a bit like the thick and fuzzy flow of many others productions but with just enough of a crisp edge.

Non seulement un groupe de rock, mais rien d'autre non plus, Camper Van Beethoven propulse une série de fusions entrainantes tout au long de son premier album, comme la chanson d'ouverture "Border Ska" l'indique par son seul titre. On his third album, Townes Van Zandt recut three crucial tracks from his debut album, 'For The Sake Of The Song', 'Waiting Around To Die', and 'I'll Be Here In The Morning' . Actually, Van Zandt rerecorded songs from his first album because he disliked the earlier recordings.) As usual, his lyrics touched on desperate themes, notably in the ballad 'Lungs,' but they were still highly poetic, especially the album-closing 'None But The Rain' which reflected on a failed relationship.

Sur son troisième album, Townes Van Zandt a repris trois pistes cruciales de son premier album, "For The Sake Of The Song", "Waiting Around To Die» et «I'll Be Here In The Morning". Welcome to the humid, claustrophobic, darkness of Civilians. Looking for the heart in the center of any Joe Henry recording is a labyrinthine exercise that ultimately leads to bemusement, and sometimes, outright frustration. Perhaps that is because it's on display at every moment. So big, so bruised, and papered with tattered words, phrases, and sad but true jokes. Civilians has as many stories attached as any record Henry's written, but they're so finely crafted now that the singer almost disappears in their flickering appearances on the wall of the mind of the listener.

Bienvenue dans l'ambiance moite, confinée et obscure de Civilians. Rechercher le coeur au centre de tout enregistrement de Joe Henry est un exercice labyrinthique qui conduit finalement à effarement, et parfois, là a frustration pure et simple. Chris Cacavas - Love's Been Discontinued (2009)

Keyboardist of Green on Red and a solo artist for twenty years, Chris Cacavas is definitely left a huge mark in rock’n'roll. But Love’s Been Discounted is likely his crowning masterpiece when at least in the solo period. I don’t know much about the events that happened in Chris’ life that fueled this record with inspiration, but record seems like a break-up record, a serious redefinition of the term 'love' for sure. Musically, it’s a soft record with wonderful guitar solos, songs that dramatically build up. Incredible background harmonizing that takes you by surprise at the most unsuspecting moments often constitute the most dramatic places of this record.

Claviériste de Green on Red et artiste solo depuis vingt ans, Chris Cacavas a certainement laissé une énorme empreinte sur le rock'n'roll. Mais Love's Been Discontinued est probablement son œuvre la plus achevée tout au moins dans sa période solo. On ne sait pas si ce sont les événements qui se sont produits dans la vie de Chris qui a alimenté son inspiration, mais cet enregistrement semble comme un disque rupture, une redéfinition sérieuse du terme amour pour sûr. Musicalement, c'est un disque doux avec de magnifiques solos de guitare qui soutiennent les chansons de façon spectaculaire. L'incroyable fond d'harmonies qui vous prend par surprise aux moments les plus inattendus apporte souvent les instants les plus dramatiques de cet album.

Calexico - Carried To Dust (2008)

From its beautiful, spray-painted stencil artwork (courtesy of longtime Calexico cover artist Victor Gastelum) to the sounds within it, Carried to Dust recalls previous Calexico high points like The Black Light and, especially, Feast of Wire. Considering that Joey Burns and John Convertino reunited with many of the Feast of Wire players for these songs, the similarities shouldn't come as a surprise -- nor should Calexico's skill at revisiting older territory and finding new outcroppings in it.

De sa belle couverture, peinte à la bombe au pochoir (oeuvre réalisée par l'artiste Victor Gastelum, déjà auteur des couvertures précédentes) aux sons à l'intérieur, Carried To Dust rappelle les meilleurs Calexico comme The Black Light et, en particulier, Feast of Wire. Cage The Elephant - Cage The Elephant (2008)

The more things change in rock, the more they inevitably stay the same -- and in the case of Cage the Elephant, that's a good thing. Cage the Elephant didn't exist until 2005, but as this self-titled album demonstrates, their ability to be influenced by alternative rock and classic rock simultaneously is a definite plus. Drawing on influences from different eras, this Kentucky-based band has an appealing sound that combines a strong appreciation of the Rolling Stones with elements of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beck, hip-hop, and punk.

Plus les choses changent dans le rock, plus elles restent inévitablement les mêmes - et dans le cas de Cage the Elephant, c'est une bonne chose. Cage the Elephant n'a pas existé avant 2005, mais comme le montre cet album éponyme, leur capacité à être influencés par le rock alternatif et le classic rock  est indéniablement un avantage certain. Tirant leurs influences de différentes époques, ce groupe basé dans le Kentucky a un son attrayant qui, empreint d'une forte parenté avec les Rolling Stones, combine également des éléments propres à Red Hot Chili Peppers et à Beck, hip-hop et punk.

Big Head Todd - Sister Sweetly (1993)

With guitars remaining firmly in the forefront, Colorado's Big Head Todd And The Monsters ease into their album Sister Sweetly with a laid-back gait. The best of this loping stuff - like 'It's Alright' - makes for catchy, radio-ready fare, as does the more rollicking 'Bittersweet'.

Avec des guitares restant fermement dans l'avant-garde, les Big Head Todd du Colorado sont très à l'aise dans leur album Sister Sweetly où ils affichent une attitude très décontractée. With great sound and better playing, Phish's debut Junta is highly recommended whether you're starting to discover Phish or are backing up to the beginning. It may be a bit long-winded and unfocused, yet it establishes their dedication to musical exploration effectively -- not to mention the typical wild and woolly Phish humor spilling out all over the lengthy tracks.

Avec son superbe son et son jeu magnifique, Junta des débuts de Phish est fortement recommandé si vous commencez à découvrir Phish ou souhaitez revenir sur leur carrière. Il peut être un peu long haleine et vague, mais il établit clairement leur dévouement à une exploration musicale efficace - sans parler de l'humour, à la fois sauvage et quelque peu laineux, débordant tout au long des pistes.

Chuck Prophet - Balinese Dancer (1993)

This ballad-oriented solo outing from former Green on Red guitarist Chuck Prophet offers up spare swamp rock, setting the singer's dusky voice against a backdrop of slide, steel and finger-picked electric guitars. Opting for mood as much as content, the material is simple and homespun, adding touches of the blues and zydeco for an authentic backwoods feel.

Cette sortie solo très orientée ballade de l'ancien Green On red pour le guitariste Chuck Prophet offre un swamp rock de qualité. La voix sombre du chanteur, posée sur fond de diapositives, est élégamment drapée de guitares électriques jouées en slide. Jack Johnson - In Between Dreams (2005)

Singer/songwriter Jack Johnson writes songs that just feel good, sticking to an equation that combines his warm, relaxed voice with an acoustic guitar. That cozy formula made him a favorite among American college crowds, so it's no surprise that Johnson sticks with what he does best for his third album, In Between Dreams.

Cowboy Junkies - Open (2001)

Cowboy Junkies have a sound, a vibe. There's no denying it. You can tell it's them within a few notes and each successive record seems to pick up right where the last one left off. Some, like The Trinity Sessions, are dark, moody, and mellow, like being coated in honey and draped in velvet. Others, take Pale Sun, Crescent Moon for example, seem downright energetic in comparison. Open is more in line with the first batch, though it has moments of near-enthusiastic revelry.

Les Cowboy Junkies ont un son, une ambiance. Il n'y a pas à le nier. Vous pouvez les reconnaître aux premières notes et chaque enregistrement successif semble reprendre là où le dernier s'était arrêté. Certains, comme The Trinity Sessions, sont sombres, de mauvaise humeur, et moelleux, comme étant enrobés dans du miel et drapés de velours. D'autres, prenez Pale Sun ou Crescent Moon par exemple, semblent carrément énergiques en comparaison. Open est à ranger avec le premier lot, mais il a aussi des moments de réjouissances presque enthousiastes.

L’album, plus compact et lumineux, refonde les chansons tout en conservant leur intensité émotionnelle

Dave Matthews ne semble pas tout à fait ravi de cette version. Mais comment vous sentiriez-vous si vous aviez fait un album avec un producteur que vous n'avez pas aimé, que vous avez sous-évalué, puis que vous vous réveillez un matin pour trouver une fuite sur Internet et retrouver l'album bootleg disponible à chaque coin de rue à New York City? Voilà à peu près ce qui est arrivé avec The Sessions Lillywhite, l'inédit, prédécesseur plus sombre à l'album blockbuster Everyday. Plutôt que de tourner le dos aux fans, cependant, Matthews est retourné en studio pour faire le travail qui convenait. Sur Busted Stuff, il fait revivre ces chansons solennelles avec une intensité diligente, créant de belles étendues de mélancolie. Busted Stuff, released July 16, 2002, sees Dave Matthews Band re-record nine tracks from the abandoned Lillywhite Sessions and add two new ones—“Where Are You Going” and “You Never Know”—under producer Stephen Harris. The result is a more polished and tighter album that retained the emotional core of the original demos while achieving commercial success .

Dave Matthews doesn't exactly seem thrilled about this release. But how would you feel if you made an album with a producer you didn't like, dumped it, and then woke up one morning to find it leaked on the Internet and available at every bootleg stall in New York City? That's pretty much what happened with "The Lillywhite Sessions," the unreleased, darker predecessor to the blockbuster Everyday album. Rather than turn their back on the fans, however, Matthews returned to the studio to do the job right. On Busted Stuff, they revive those solemn songs with diligent intensity, creating lovely swaths of melancholy. Elegant tracks like "Grace Is Gone" and "Digging a Ditch" replace the dreary gloss of the last album with dazzling intimacy, and even the band's usual tendency for meandering jazz-rock flights is kept in check by the sheer weight of the material.

Warren Haynes - Ashes & Dust

When Warren Haynes released the rocking soul Man in Motion in 2011, it was the fulfillment of a dream, to write and record songs that reflected the early influence of those sounds on his musical development with an all-star band. Ashes & Dust is another side of his story. Growing up in Asheville, North Carolina, Haynes was equally exposed to bluegrass, mountain folk music, and country gospel. Their influence is plentiful here, on originals and covers alike.  Haynes uses electric guitars here; they are part and parcel of a largely acoustic tapestry that can loosely be called Americana.

Not only is Medusa the finest offering from '70s outfit Trapeze, it is one of the decade's most underappreciated hard rock recordings. With a lineup that consisted of future Deep Purple, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath members, there seems to be proof that at least a few fellow musicians appreciated this 1971 offering. Fans of his later work might be surprised by Glenn Hughes' soulful vocal delivery, especially on the midtempo blues-rockers like 'Black Cloud' and 'Your Love Is Alright'.
