Issu d’une famille de musiciens légendaires, Alejandro Escovedo (frère de Pete Escovedo et oncle de Sheila E.) a d’abord brillé dans des groupes punk comme The Nuns et roots rock comme Rank and File. Gravity, son tout premier album solo sorti en 1992, marque un virage plus introspectif. Cet opus tisse une folk mélancolique, souvent dépouillée, empreinte d’un lyrisme poignant. Porté par une instrumentation discrète (violons, guitares acoustiques) et des textes profonds sur l'amour, la perte, la famille ou l’exil, Gravity impose Escovedo comme un songwriter majeur de l’underground texan, entre Townes Van Zandt et Leonard Cohen.

Alors que Alejandro Escovedo avait montré une grande polyvalence au cours des 15 premières années de sa carrière musicale - en jouant avec les premiers ravers punk The Nuns et les brûlants rockers The True Believers, parmi tant d'autres - il n'avait pas attendu la formation des Believers qu'il avait déjà commencé à montrer ses formidables talents d'auteur-compositeur, et, avec son premier album solo, Gravity, Escobedo a aussi montré qu'il possédait l'une des voix lyriques les plus fortes et les plus distinctives de sa génération.

A veteran of punk and roots rock scenes, Alejandro Escovedo launched his solo career in 1992 with Gravity, a beautifully sparse and emotional debut. Known for his past work with The Nuns and Rank and File, Escovedo took a quieter, more poetic direction here. Blending Americana, folk, and chamber pop, Gravity is filled with haunting string arrangements and introspective lyrics dealing with grief, love, and identity. It’s a quietly stunning album that introduced Escovedo as a deeply personal and literate voice in American songwriting.

While Alejandro Escovedo had shown plenty of versatility over the first 15 years of his career in music -- playing with early punk ravers The Nuns and roots rock firebrands the True Believers, among many others -- it wasn't until The Believers took shape that he began to display his formidable gifts as a songwriter, and with his first solo album, Gravity, Escobedo belatedly made it clear that he possessed one of the strongest and most distinctive lyrical voices of his generation.
