L’album, plus compact et lumineux, refonde les chansons tout en conservant leur intensité émotionnelle

Dave Matthews ne semble pas tout à fait ravi de cette version. Mais comment vous sentiriez-vous si vous aviez fait un album avec un producteur que vous n'avez pas aimé, que vous avez sous-évalué, puis que vous vous réveillez un matin pour trouver une fuite sur Internet et retrouver l'album bootleg disponible à chaque coin de rue à New York City? Voilà à peu près ce qui est arrivé avec The Sessions Lillywhite, l'inédit, prédécesseur plus sombre à l'album blockbuster Everyday. Plutôt que de tourner le dos aux fans, cependant, Matthews est retourné en studio pour faire le travail qui convenait. Sur Busted Stuff, il fait revivre ces chansons solennelles avec une intensité diligente, créant de belles étendues de mélancolie. Des pistes élégantes comme 'Grace Is Gone' et 'Digging A Ditch' remplacent le brillant morne du dernier album avec une intimité éblouissante, et même  la tendance habituelle du groupe qui est de serpenter sur des envolées jazz-rock est tenue en échec par le simple poids du contenu.

Busted Stuff, released July 16, 2002, sees Dave Matthews Band re-record nine tracks from the abandoned Lillywhite Sessions and add two new ones—“Where Are You Going” and “You Never Know”—under producer Stephen Harris. The result is a more polished and tighter album that retained the emotional core of the original demos while achieving commercial success .

Dave Matthews doesn't exactly seem thrilled about this release. But how would you feel if you made an album with a producer you didn't like, dumped it, and then woke up one morning to find it leaked on the Internet and available at every bootleg stall in New York City? That's pretty much what happened with "The Lillywhite Sessions," the unreleased, darker predecessor to the blockbuster Everyday album. Rather than turn their back on the fans, however, Matthews returned to the studio to do the job right. On Busted Stuff, they revive those solemn songs with diligent intensity, creating lovely swaths of melancholy. Elegant tracks like "Grace Is Gone" and "Digging a Ditch" replace the dreary gloss of the last album with dazzling intimacy, and even the band's usual tendency for meandering jazz-rock flights is kept in check by the sheer weight of the material.
