Thorinshield est un trio américain formé à Los Angeles vers 1967 : Terry Hand (batterie), James Smith (guitare) et Bobby Ray (basse), ce dernier ayant joué comme musicien de session sur l’album Sunshine Superman de Donovan. Produit par le saxophoniste Steve Douglas avec des arrangements de Perry Botkin Jr., cet unique album éponyme, sorti en 1968 sur Philips Records, mêle folk‑psych, pop baroque et sunshine pop sophistiqué. Bien que discrètement accueilli à sa sortie, l’album est aujourd’hui reconnu comme un classique mineur du genre, loué pour ses harmonies complexes, ses orchestrations délicates et un son optimiste teinté d’expérimentation.

Formed in L.A. around 1967, Thorinshield comprised Terry Hand (drums), James Smith (guitar), and Bobby Ray (bass), who had worked as a session musician on Donovan’s Sunshine Superman album. Their sole self-titled album, released in 1968 on Philips Records and produced by Steve Douglas with arrangements by Perry Botkin Jr., is a tasteful blend of folk‑psych, baroque pop, and lush sunshine pop. Though largely overlooked at the time, the album has since earned cult status for its sophisticated harmonies, detailed orchestration, and optimistic yet inventive melody craft.
