Fondé en 1968 par le duo Michael Zager et Aram Schefrin, Ten Wheel Drive est un big band rock avant-gardiste mêlant jazz, soul, rock psychédélique et cuivres flamboyants. La pièce maîtresse du groupe est sans conteste Genya Ravan, chanteuse charismatique d’origine polonaise, ex-leadeuse du groupe Goldie & the Gingerbreads, dont la voix rauque et expressive rappelle Janis Joplin. Avec Construction #1, premier album du groupe paru en 1969 chez Polydor, Ten Wheel Drive pose les fondations d’un style inclassable et audacieux, aux arrangements brillamment orchestrés et à la tension rythmique constante. L’album, à la fois théâtral et explosif, s’impose comme l’une des meilleures synthèses de jazz-rock fusion américaine pré-Chicago/BS&T.

Ten Wheel Drive, formed in 1968 by Michael Zager and Aram Schefrin, was a groundbreaking American jazz-rock fusion band fronted by the powerful and gritty vocals of Genya Ravan, formerly of Goldie & the Gingerbreads. Their debut album Construction #1, released in 1969 on Polydor, showcases a dynamic blend of brass-driven rock, soulful vocals, and complex jazz-inflected arrangements. The band carved its place among early fusion pioneers, anticipating the sound of Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears, but with a more experimental and theatrical edge. A bold and energetic debut that remains a cult favorite.
