Parmi les joyaux oubliés du folk rock britannique, Trees occupe une place à part. Formé à Londres en 1969, le groupe s’inscrit dans la lignée de Fairport Convention ou Steeleye Span, mais avec une touche plus psychédélique et une sensibilité quasi onirique. Leur premier album, The Garden of Jane Delawney, sorti en 1970 chez CBS, est un disque aussi mystérieux qu’envoûtant, entre ballades hantées, guitares électriques en apesanteur et folklore anglais revisité.

La voix cristalline de Celia Humphris, combinée aux guitares fluides de Barry Clarke et David Costa, transporte l’auditeur dans un monde à la fois ancien et halluciné. Le morceau-titre, à la fois élégiaque et troublant, résume parfaitement l’univers du groupe : une beauté fragile et étrange, suspendue entre rêve pastoral et spleen psychédélique. Longtemps resté dans l’ombre, l’album est aujourd’hui considéré comme une œuvre culte du psych folk britannique.

One of the most hauntingly beautiful acts of the British folk rock movement, Trees emerged from London in 1969. While often compared to Fairport Convention, they carved a unique niche with a dreamier, more psychedelic take on traditional English folk. Their debut album, The Garden of Jane Delawney, released in 1970 by CBS, blends ancient melodies with electric instrumentation and surreal atmospheres.

Fronted by Celia Humphris’s ethereal vocals and supported by the interwoven guitars of Barry Clarke and David Costa, the album evokes a mystical world of ghostly ballads and electric pagan rituals. The title track, both mournful and transcendent, stands as a highlight of British psych folk. Though overlooked in its time, the album has since earned cult classic status.
