Sorti en janvier 1968, Heavy est le premier album d’Iron Butterfly, groupe originaire de San Diego, pionnier du hard rock psychédélique. L’album impose d’emblée un son lourd et massif – une base rythmique épaisse, des riffs d’orgue Farfisa distordus et une voix grave et incantatoire. Il s’agit d’un des premiers jalons du hard rock naissant, qui influencera bientôt des groupes comme Deep Purple ou Black Sabbath. Heavy précède le mythique In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, mais en pose déjà les fondations : lourdeur hypnotique, motifs répétitifs et fureur contenue.

Heavy, released in January 1968, is the debut album by Iron Butterfly, a band hailing from San Diego and one of the early forerunners of heavy psychedelic rock. The album introduced their signature sound: thick fuzz-drenched guitar and organ riffs, pounding drums, and Doug Ingle’s deep, hypnotic vocals. Though overshadowed by their later smash In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Heavy laid the groundwork for the band's signature style and helped forge the early blueprint for what would become heavy metal and hard rock.
