Après leur premier disque éponyme, McGuinn, Clark & Hillman reviennent en 1980 avec City, un album qui montre une orientation encore plus marquée vers le soft rock FM, au détriment des racines folk-rock des Byrds. Gene Clark, en proie à des difficultés personnelles, ne participe que partiellement à l’enregistrement, ce qui réduit son rôle dans le projet. Roger McGuinn et Chris Hillman mènent la barque avec des titres bien produits mais parfois aseptisés. Malgré ces limites, City propose quelques titres accrocheurs et témoigne d’une époque charnière où les anciens pionniers du rock adaptent leur son aux standards de la radio commerciale.

Following their 1979 debut, McGuinn, Clark & Hillman released City in 1980, an album that leaned more heavily into FM-friendly soft rock. Due to personal struggles, Gene Clark had a reduced presence on this record, leaving much of the songwriting and performing duties to McGuinn and Hillman. The production is slick, with polished arrangements and a radio-oriented sound that sometimes overshadows the trio’s folk-rock heritage. Still, City contains several melodic highlights and reflects the band’s attempt to stay relevant in a changing musical landscape.
