The Peanut Butter Conspiracy, un groupe basé à Hollywood (et non pas à San Francisco) a été l'un des premiers groupes très appréciés sur la côte ouest au moment de ces enregistrements, au moins dans l'opinion des auditeurs, mais les faveurs des critiques étaient souvent réservées à l'époque aux groupes tels que les Doors, Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, etc. Ainsi, en raison notamment d'un meilleur examen au bénéfice du Jefferson Airplane reçu dans le New Jersey, Bill Graham a dit "plus de concerts avec Peanut Butter" et le groupe a été maintenu à l'écart de la côte ouest, comme de Woodstock ou du festival de Monterey, ce qui explique beaucoup leur notoriété très discrète.

Avec The Great Conspiracy, sorti en 1967, The Peanut Butter Conspiracy s’impose comme l’un des groupes phares du rock psychédélique de la côte ouest. Porté par la voix envoûtante de Barbara Robison (alias Sandi Peanut Butter), le groupe tisse un univers sonore entre folk rock lumineux et expérimentations acides, marqué par des guitares fuzz et des harmonies vocales sophistiquées. Moins connu que ses contemporains (Jefferson Airplane, Love), l’album n’en demeure pas moins une pépite de la scène underground californienne.

The Peanut Butter Conspiracy, a Hollywood based group (not San Francisco) was one of the top groups on the west coast at the time of this double LP (in fact, two LPs assembled), at least in personal appearances, often booked atop groups thought today to have been the top artists of the time, such as the Doors, Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, etc. Because of a better review than the Jefferson Airplane, Bill Graham said "no more gigs with Peanut Butter" and the group was kept out of west-coast packages, Woodstock, the Monterey Festival and that had a lot to do with what kept them from the big time.

Released in 1967, The Great Conspiracy is the second album by The Peanut Butter Conspiracy, an underrated gem of the Los Angeles psychedelic rock scene. Led by the ethereal vocals of Barbara Robison, the band crafts a blend of jangly folk-rock and trippy, fuzz-drenched excursions. With its vibrant soundscapes and exploratory arrangements, the album stands as a testament to the adventurous spirit of late-60s West Coast rock.
