Sorti en 1967, ce premier album éponyme de Big Brother & The Holding Company marque les débuts discographiques de Janis Joplin, dont la voix inimitable deviendra bientôt légendaire. Ancré dans la scène psychédélique de San Francisco, l’album oscille entre blues électrique, garage rock et improvisations acides. Bien que parfois jugé brut ou désordonné, ce disque révèle toute l’énergie brute du groupe sur scène et jette les bases de l’explosion à venir avec Cheap Thrills (1968).

Premier constat , la voix de Janis Joplin , moins éraillée que sur l'album 'Cheap Thrills' à venir , propose une Pearl assez sage et un Big Brother dont le style n'a pas encore totalement accosté les rives du blues et du rock psychédélique déchiré . Les compositions qui sont assez proches de ce que réalisaient les DOORS ( ex : 'Intruder' ) , les Jefferson Airplane ( ex : 'Light is faster than sound') ou encore The Mamas and the Papas ( ex: 'Blindman' ) à la même époque , témoignent aussi d'une forte influence rock 50's façon Buddy Holly ( 'Caterpillar' , 'Call On Me' ) . La production de l'album , plutôt bonne pour l'époque , saura satisfaire les puristes du son qui ne supportent pas les fréquences saturées à la fuzz omniprésentes sur Cheap Thrills , les deux guitaristes jouant essentiellement en clean channel . Les débuts discographique de Janis Joplin semblent paisibles et presque joyeux comparés aux tourments et blessures de l'âme chantés avec cette voix cassée et intense que l'on trouvera sur les disques à venir .

Released in 1967, this self-titled debut by Big Brother & The Holding Company introduced the world to Janis Joplin’s powerhouse vocals. Rooted in the San Francisco psychedelic scene, the album blends garage rock, electric blues, and raw acid improvisation. Though not as polished as their later work, it captures the raw, live spirit of the band and foreshadows the iconic status they would achieve with Cheap Thrills.

First observation, the voice of Janis Joplin, less scratchy than on the album Cheap Thrills to come, Pearl offers wise enough and Big Brother whose style has not completely docked the shores of blues and psychedelic rock . The compositions which are fairly close to what realized the Doors ('Intruder'), the Jefferson Airplane ('Light is faster than sound') or The Mamas and the Papas ('Blindman') to the same time also show a strong influence rock 50's so Buddy Holly ( 'Caterpillar', 'Call on me'). The production of the album, very good for the time, will satisfy the purists that do not support its saturated frequencies to the ubiquitous fuzz on Cheap Thrills, the two guitarists playing essentially clean channel. The discography debut Janis Joplin seem peaceful and almost cheerful compared to the torments and wounds of the soul sung with that broken and intense voice that can be found on the next disc.
